Sandy Miles, professor of business management, will travel to Paris, France in March as on of three delegates representing the U.S. in a national human resources meeting.
Miles has been chosen by the International Organization for Standardization to participate in the work group for examining international standards on human resources, based on her contributions to the human resource management field.
The work group develops standard policies for the human resources field and seeks approval from the other participating countries.
According to the ISO website, ISO is the world’s largest developer and publisher of International Standards with which many countries participate.
ISO enables a consensus to be reached on solutions that meet both the requirements of business and the broader need of society.
In November, at the ISO Technical Committee for Establishing International Human Resources Management Standards 260 first meeting, 13 countries participated to improve standards for employee management in Washington, D.C.
Miles was one of five representing the U.S. at the meeting.
After the meeting in Washington, D.C., France took the initiative to the host the next meeting in March and chose the work groups they wanted to participate.
Miles said at the meeting, in Paris, she would like to see the selected groups come to a compliance to improve the work place for people worldwide.
“I’m hoping to come to an agreement of the terminology of what human governance is and what it encompasses,” she said. “My goal is to make the work place a better place for the employees.”
Miles has focused a lot of her career to teaching and researching human governance.
“I’ve been trying to grow students in human resources since I got here in 1991,” Miles said.
When Miles first started working at the University there was not a human resource major available. She worked with students who were interested in an employee management career and eventually was able to add it to the academic curriculum under a management degree.
Miles also worked to develop, The Link, a pamphlet published every six months to connect professional human resource employees with current University human resource students.
The Link profiles former alumni and discusses their accomplishments in the human resource field.
“It helps our current students to see what our previous students did and look at how successful they are,” Miles said.
She said her research includes topics such employees salaries, evaluation of employee performance, employee work schedules and vacation days.
“Basically (asking) is the organization doing what they said they are going to do,” she said. “It’s a values based inside out.”
Along with her research, Miles worked with her colleague, Glynn Managold, professor of marketing, to publish four articles dealing with employee branding in human resource management systems.
