Staff congress met for their monthly meeting April 18 to discuss several University events and employee concerns.

Allan Ward, athletic director, attended the meeting to address the committee and inform them of the plans for the next basketball season.

Ward said the racers 31-2 season has proved to now only be successful for the athletic department, but the University as well.

“You can’t buy that kind of publicity,” he said. “It has been one of those special magical years.”

Ward said Steve Prohm, head basketball coach, has agreed to sign on with Murray State for another year with an increased salary. … Continue Reading

Residential College Association (RCA) met for the last time for the semester Monday evening as President Jonah Waggoner closed the meeting by swearing in new members of the executive board.

While attendance was poor for the final meeting of the school year, the elections for president, vice president and secretary/treasury went forward as scheduled.

Graduating senior Dustin Rediess, who is returning for his master’s degree in telecommunications and systems management, was elected president of RCA after spending the past three years in the group.

Junior Alex Bibelhauser-Hiemer, from Springer College, was elected to the chair of vice president, while junior Dakota Fields, from Franklin College, was tabbed to become the secretary/treasurer.

Starting at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Springer/Franklin will be holding their Freekee Teekee party in the lawn between the two buildings. Activities include a waterslide, a bungee run, a jousting arena and free food. Everyone is encouraged to attend.

As a treat to students preparing for finals, Winslow will hold its annual Midnight Breakfast starting at 9 p.m. this Sunday. Student ID is required to procure a meal.

The Student Government Association held its last meeting Wednesday night in the Curris Center. The meeting opened with President Jeremiah Johnson announcing the fall retreat for all SGA members.

He also encouraged members who are staying in Murray for the summer to help out with the SGA booth and summer orientation for the freshman.

Kevin Coughlin, SGA vice president, said Midnight Breakfast will be hosted by Dining Services at 9 p.m. on Sunday at Winslow. He also announced that Waterfield Library is now open 24 hours a day until May 11.

The next SGA meeting will be August 15.

The Residential College Association met Monday afternoon to discuss the final three weeks of campus activities and prepare for elections for new officers.

Don Robertson, vice president of Student Affairs, reminded students to attend the University’s most important annual event, All-Campus Sing. The pre-show begins at 4 p.m. Wednesday, with the actual competition starting at 4:30 p.m.

Robertson also discussed the busy weekend ahead with the campus hosting its first Summer Orientation for the fall semester, coupled with the half-marathon taking place in Murray on Saturday.

Derrick McReynolds, assistant director of Residence Education, announced the hiring of four new Residential Directors for Hester, Franklin, Richmond and Clark. The new hires have not been assigned as of yet, and an announcement of their placement will come in the future. … Continue Reading

Alliance opened its weekly meeting Sunday night by the members of the executive board training the upcoming officers for their new positions.

Pat McCutchen, senior lecturer for humanities and fine arts, spoke to the general assembly members on how to become an agent of change.

She said when people talk about agents of change, they think about people who have brought about tremendous change socially.

“Change agents aren’t just these great people who go down in history,” McCutchen said. “Most change agents you will never know.”

McCutchen said the change that happens on a daily basis with everyday people is what makes the most difference.

She said most people think progression is coming slowly, but she encouraged everyone to take action with anything they think needs a change. … Continue Reading

The Student Government Association opened its weekly meeting on Wednesday with discussion about the upcoming elections for SGA president.

Betsy Banks, vice president of SGA said applications are due by noon on April 2. There will be a mandatory meeting in the Barkley Room at 4 p.m. on April 2.

She said voting for SGA president will be will be April 16-18 on MyGate.

Paula Amols, director of Dining Services and Racer Hospitality said Dining Services has partnered with Jasmine Thai and Sushi restaurant and will start selling sushi on campus later in the semester. … Continue Reading

Residential College Association met Monday evening to discuss important events occurring both in the residential and University zones of campus.

Amidst the tragedy occurring on March 15 regarding the death of a student on campus, Student Affairs Vice President Don Robertson urged anyone needing counseling for the events can visit counselors in the Psychological Center in Applied Science.

To meet the large needs for counseling over the past couple of weeks, a small open forum will be held on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in the small Curris Center ballroom. Counselors will be on hand to discuss handling grief and the pains of human loss.

On April 18, Lovett Auditorium steps will again host the immensely popular All-Campus Sing. Campus programs and residential colleges are preparing for what looks to be a very competitive event. … Continue Reading

Alliance held its weekly meeting Sunday night in the Curris Center.

President Will Heath said the Celebrate and Support a Fair Kentucky party will be 7-9:30 p.m. on March 31. The ally of the year award will be given at the party.

The group will present Live Homosexual Acts on April 3 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the free speech zone. Members will tie-dye shirts, play Frisbee and other outside activities.

Pat McCuthen, sociology professor, will be speaking to Alliance on April 1 on becoming an agent of change. Public Safety will be speaking at the general assembly meeting on April 8.

The annual Day of Silence will be April 20. Alliance members will be handing out informational brochures and pamphlets about the Day of Silence from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Curris Center. The Day of Silence is the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network’s annual day of protest against bullying of LGBT students and their allies.

The White House Office of Public Engagement is inviting college students to a career pathways briefing featuring John Berry, Director, U.S. Office of Personnel Management on April 13. Alliance voted to pay the way of one student to go to the conference.

The meeting closed with nominations for president and vice president for the 2012-13 school year.

Alliance held its weekly meeting Sunday night in the Curris Center with discussion about the profits from the March 1 drag show.

President Will Heath said the group made record profits with the final earnings being $2,103.18.

The annual Day of Silence will be April 20. Alliance members will be handing out informational brochures and pamphlets about the Day of Silence from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Curris Center. The Day of Silence is the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network’s annual day of protest against bullying of LGBT students and their allies.

The group will participate in a clean streets day on April 7 where they clean the streets of Calloway County. Each member participating will earn $6 a person an hour. The money will help the Alliance pay for various activities they put on throughout the semester.

Public Safety will be coming to speak the Alliance’s general assembly meeting.

Nominations for Alliance president for the 2012-13 school year will be on March 25 and April 1 will be the final election.

The meeting closed with general assembly meeting discussing the upcoming elections for Alliance officers.

Residential College Association met Monday night to further discuss pressing issues and upcoming campus events involving both the residential colleges and its residents.

Don Robertson, vice president of Student Affairs, opened the floor to start the meeting by discussing First Year Leader interest sessions beginning Mar. 8 from 8:30 to 10 p.m. in the Curris Center Stables.

“First year leaders are critical for the University’s retention efforts,” Robertson said. “We need students to come out and get more involved.”

Robertson also brought to attention the Women’s Center event Mirrors Mess with the Mind, an event being held this week Tuesday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Curris Center Dance Lounge. The event was coordinated to increase campus awareness of eating disorders.

Along with Robertson, Jonah Waggoner, SGA representative and RCA president, discussed Murray City Council’s decision to further table discussion regarding students being required to purchase city stickers. … Continue Reading
