Bill Zingrone
assistant professor of psychology

Steven Herr’s response to my reply stemming from my original editorial “Religion is not the answer” cites some research from psychology and psychiatry that religious belief may have some potential benefits for the life of the individual doing the believing. And that may well be true. But the focus of my editorial and my response to Professor Goggins was the not merely potential but very tangible negative effects of religious thought on our individual personal freedoms, as believers of all stripes mistakenly think, since they claim to understand what some god intends for all of our behavior, they get to impose it on the rest of us. … Continue Reading

One of my favorite things about the spring and summer season is finding produce locally at the local farmer’s markets. Calloway County’s two farmer’s markets will be opening in May. Local farmers, producers and vendors gather together to sell their products to the locals at either the court square or at the fairgrounds. … Continue Reading

To the best of my understanding, one of the hallmarks of enlightened thinking is a willingness to broadly engage the topic at hand, which is why I was surprised that Professor Bill Zingrone’s recent missives have focused on the shortcomings of religion but made no mention of its virtues. … Continue Reading

assistant professor of philosophy

In “Religion is not the Answer to our problems,” Dr. Zingrone discusses a speech recently given by Pastor Dennis Terry of Greenwell Springs Baptist Church. According to Zingrone, Terry stated in this speech that those who do not share his political and religious views should leave the country. … Continue Reading

I was a graduate public administration student at Murray State University in the spring semester of 1991 when I saw the video tape of the beating of motorist Rodney King by Los Angeles police officers. To be quite honest, I was outraged, but I was willing to allow the system to play out and deliver justice as determined by the facts and the law. … Continue Reading

As he dashed pell-mell from the Capitol in Jackson, the lame-duck, departing Republican governor of Mississippi, Barbour, issued pardons to several convicted murderers, understandably incensing families of crime victims and all reasonable, civic-minded citizens. … Continue Reading

Newt Gingrich apparently thinks the Founding Fathers made a terrible mistake when they established an independent court system. Under his proposals, judges would please the President, Congress and the public – or suffer the consequences. … Continue Reading

What’s on your plate? If you do not eat locally grown, raised or produced food, then more than likely, you are eating food that is not real. This “food” has been chemically processed and refined while adding artificial ingredients to produce it in different shapes, sizes, tastes, colors and forms. And since our government allows genetically modified organisms (GMOs) to be consumed by humans and farm animals, our “food” may contain foreign genes, which have been spliced together in laboratories. … Continue Reading

I liked the dialogue that was presented this last week in The Murray State News about the sale of alcohol within the city limits. The primary argument against Grow Murray appears to be the “threat” of increased DUIs. … Continue Reading

On March 1, 2012 the Murray State Alliance hosted its biannual drag show. The event was amazing; it hosted several local drag queens and a few drag queens from out of town. However, a new issue brought itself into light. At the show it was announced several times, that the performing cast of drag queens was to stay out of the Curris Center hallway. Why were they told this? … Continue Reading
