Music on the diamond

Baseball is a sport where every swing, pitch, catch, play, statement and gesture is analyzed and critiqued. Walk out music has become an area of the game where players and fans have freedom to express themselves.

A player’s walk-up song can give insight into his personality. Whether heading to the mound or the batter’s box, good music can help a player perform his best.

The music helps pump up not only the players but can help get the crowd into the game. For others, a song could simply be a personal favorite. A song can give a player the mental boost they need to get the final out or score the winning run.

Music has been a big part of baseball games ever since “The Star-Spangled Banner” was played at the start of the 1918 World Series opening game between the Red Socks and the Cubs.

The Murray State ‘Breds have a variety of songs. From country music to rap, when a batter steps onto the plate or a pitcher walks onto the mound, fans are sure to get pumped up and ready for action.

Luke Daugherty, freshman infielder, said his walk out song is “Let Me Clear My Throat” by DJ Kool.

The Murray State men’s and women’s tennis teams saw their seasons come to an end last weekend at the OVC Tennis Championships in Nashville, Tenn.

The men’s team bowed out on Friday in a 4-0 loss to Eastern Kentucky. The ladies won a challenging first-round matchup against Morehead State, 4-3 on Friday before losing to UT-Martin 4-1 in the semifinals on Saturday. The men’s team finished the season with a 5-13 record. The women’s team netted a 12-11 mark.

One Racer’s courageous fight through adversity highlighted the women’s weekend. Ashley Pierson, senior from Acworth, Ga., played with leg cramps throughout the final match and secured an opening round victory for the Racers on Friday.

“We knew it was going to be tough, and it was,” said Kara Amundson, women’s first-year head coach. “It came down to the last match, and we had (Pierson) who had battled leg cramps the whole match just gut it out.”

Pierson’s effort was indicative of the team’s toughness this season.

“This team has been really resilient,” Amundson said. “They have been really hard workers. At the beginning of the year your goal as a team is always to peak at the end of the year going into the OVC tournament and compete for the champion

“I definitely think that’s what we did. Throughout the year there were things we needed to work on and get better at, but they came out, worked hard every day and I think we got better throughout the year. We were in a good spot to compete for the tournament; we just fell a little short.”

Amundson said the season’s end is always the most difficult.

“It’s the hardest day of the year,” she said. “Saying you’re actually done, and saying goodbye to your senior class. It’s different not going out to

practice the next week. It’s tough losing the two seniors, Cassidy (Cunitz) and Ashley (Pierson). They did a great job of leading.”

The tennis teams will now break to focus on finishing the semester, getting some rest and working hard to stay in shape and improving for next year’s season.

“It’s a much-needed break for (the players),” Amundson said. “It’ll be a good break for them to recoup, rest up for finals and get a chance to get better over the summer. I know that with the returning kids that we have and the three kids that we’ve signed so far, we’re going to have a lot of

personalities ready to step up and lead us next year.”

Just another game: Rematch not fueled by revenge

Tennessee State and Murray State enjoy ending each other’s winning streaks.

Junior guard Isaiah Canaan had 24 points, four assists and was 5-for-7 behind the arc to take No. 12/14 Murray State to an 80-62 victory over Tennessee State Thursday night in Nashville, Tenn., ending the Tigers’ nine-game winning streak.

The teams met in Murray two weeks prior when Tennessee State ended the Racers’ (then No. 9) 23-game undefeated streak in a 72-68 upset. Since its loss, Murray State (27-1, 14-1, Ohio Valley Conference) has won three straight, including a 65-51 win over No. 21 Saint Mary’s Saturday.

“It wasn’t (revenge), it was just another game,” Canaan said. “We just wanted to come out and get a great win on the road. If a lot of other people look at it as a statement game then we’re fine with that but we were just focusing on coming in and getting a great road win against a great team.”

Senior guard Donte Poole added 16 points and three rebounds to the Murray State win, while Robert Covington led the Tigers (18-11, 11-5, OVC) in scoring with 24 points and 15 rebounds but it wasn’t enough to combat the Racers of Murray State.

“I thought Murray played extremely well,” Tennessee State Head Coach John Cooper said. “Not only did they make shots but I thought their resolve to stay with what they wanted to do, I thought they defended very well and obviously we didn’t have an answer for them. They were better than us tonight.”

The Racers played the Tigers in front of another sellout crowd, this time with 10,125 in attendance – a new record and the second largest non-graduation event in TSU’s history, right behind the 11,000 people who saw Stevie Wonder in 1980.

Lightning struck twice for the Racers last night in Nashville.

The 87-83 win marked the second victory for the team against the Tennessee State Tigers this season; their first in the Gentry Center.

“They played with a lot of energy this game,” senior guard Mallory Schwab said. “Every win they get is also one step closer to the tournament for them, so they have something to fight for.”

Led by red-shirt sophomore guard Erica Burgess with 27 points, Murray State (12-16, 8-7 Ohio Valley Conference) came out of a battle of the offenses, with the lead changing 15 times. … Continue Reading
