Strong showing at championship

Jacksonville State and Austin Peay were expected to be near the top, but Murray State was a big surpriuse at last week’s OVC Tournament.

Indeed, it was, and what a surprise they were in the OVC Golf Championship.

Led by the outstanding play of junior Patrick Newcomb and a retooled lineup behind him, the Racers mounted a spirited comeback from 11 shots down to take home third place in the OVC Championship held April 26-28 at Greystone Golf Club in Dickson, Tenn.

Picked to finish eighth in the tournament by OVC coaches, the Racers pushed everything aside and brought a clean slate to the tournament, determined to not have the season written off as a failure. … Continue Reading

Women’s golf takes third: Racers make strong comeback in second round, come up short

After posting a field-best 308 in the second round of the OVC Championship, the Racers looked poised to storm back and stake claim to the NCAA Regional automatic bid and third league title since 2009.

However, a particularly difficult third round thwarted efforts, and the comeback never surfaced as the team settled for a third place finish, 18 strokes behind first place Jacksonville State and five strokes behind second place Morehead State.

Head Coach Velvet Milkman said the loss stung, especially after such an incredible run through the schedule. The Racers were the only team headed into the Championship with any tournament victories.

“We’re disappointed in the ending of the tournament,” Milkman said. “It’s not what we hoped for, and it was not our goal going in to lose. We just didn’t put 18 holes together on the same day.”

Not all was lost, however, as sophomore Delaney Howson and junior Alexandra Lennartsson both finished in the top five as individuals. Howson posted a 78-75-71=224, while Lennartsson fired a 75-73-79=227.

Because they finished in the top five, Howson and Lennartsson were chosen for the All-OVC Tournament team, while Jacksonville State also placed two players in the top five.

“I’m very proud of Delaney and Alex,” Milkman said. “They both had an opportunity to win the tournament, but we just gave up some strokes coming down the stretch.”

Senior Morgan Cross, competing in her last tournament as a Racer, finished in eighth place, shooting a 75-80-78=233, while junior Gina Nuzzo shot a score of 79-80-85=244 (22nd) and junior Alli Weaver finished out with a 79-81-85=245 (25th) to round out the Murray State starters.

Milkman said the tournament was definitely a learning experience for her players as she and the Racers hope to use the lessons as stepping stones to an even stronger team next year.

“You’ve got to stay in the moment,” she said. “It doesn’t matter what happened behind you or in front of you, the key to golf is not letting everything around you affect your golf game. No one wants to play bad golf, and (the team) didn’t want to play bad golf; what kept us back is that emotionally we weren’t strong enough.”

With little hope left, the Racers dropped eight strokes on the last hole of the tournament as Howson, Lennartsson and Weaver bogeyed, Nuzzo double-bogeyed and Cross triple-bogeyed.

Drained and defeated, the Racers returned to the clubhouse with heads held high, but were left wanting a bit disappointed with a third place finish.

For their steady play and year-round success, Lennartsson, Cross and Howson were selected All-OVC, while freshman Sophie Olley was selected All-OVC Newcomer.

After placing three players in All-OVC and two in the All-Tournament Team, Milkman was selected by her peers as OVC Coach of the Year. This marks the ninth time in 19 years of coaching Milkman has received the honor.

“If you look at the entire year, Murray State had the best year by far,” Milkman said. “It was one of the better seasons in program history, and this just goes to show that I am surrounded by good players, and we had a great year.”

Former racer wins marathon

Former Murray State Racer Wesley Korir won the Boston Marathon Monday with a time of 2 hours 12 minutes 40 seconds.

Korir, who moved to Murray from Kenya, attended Murray State in 2003-04 and competed on the men’s track team, winning the 2004 Ohio Valley Conference Outdoor Championships in the 5,000 and 10,000-meter and the 5,000-meter title at the OVC Indoor Championships. He was named the OVC Runner of the Week on two occasions.

Former Murray State men’s track and field Head Coach Norbert Elliot, now head coach at Campbell University, recruited Korir to the U.S.

“I couldn’t be more proud of Wesley,” Elliott said. “From the day he came to Murray State, he really humbled himself and didn’t really talk much about his background; he just did the best he could to make himself fit in and he really fit in well with everybody.”

Although Elliott recruited Korir, even he didn’t know how good Korir would be both on and off the track.

“Kenyans are normally very good runners, but what I was looking for was a student-athlete, and I really emphasized looking for a student-athlete, so (a friend and national coach in Kenya) found Wesley,” Elliott said. “I knew his times were good enough to award him a scholarship but not only did he surpass and go above and beyond what I thought he could do in track but he was a very, very good student at Murray as well.”

Elliott said Korir’s determination and work ethic set him apart from the rest of the pack. … Continue Reading

Isaak, Stetson propel team into national, conference standings

The ‘Breds are taking the Ohio Valley Conference by storm with the team and individual players taking top spots in the season’s rankings.

Senior infielder Travis Isaak is ranked first in the nation in doubles with 19 and although Isaak is happy with his rankings, he is not worried about them.

“I don’t go into the season trying to lead the nation in anything,” he said. “It’s a nice honor to have, but there is still a lot of season to go. I’ve got to keep playing as well as I can and help the team win.”

Isaak attributed the hard work he has put in on his swing as the reason he has been able to hit so many doubles this season.

Father-daughter keep Hall of Fame in the family

In January, Bob Doty joined daughter, Jill, in the Murray State Athletics Hall of Fame becoming the first father-daughter duo in University history to do so.

Evidently, speed can run in the family.

In 2007 Murray State volleyball and track star Jill Doty was inducted into the Murray State Athletic Hall of Fame and in January, Doty was joined there by her father, former track star Bob Doty, becoming the first father-daughter Hall of Fame duo in Murray State history.

From 1961-65, Bob Doty set and broke numerous Murray State and Ohio Valley Conference track records, cementing his name as one of the greatest sprinters ever to call Murray State his home.

Those records almost didn’t make it into the Murray State history books, as Bob originally committed to Oklahoma State prior to deciding to join the Racer family.

Bob said it was his humble, small-town upbringing that helped him change his mind and recommit.

“I called (Oklahoma State’s) coach and said, ‘I’m sorry, I don’t think I can survive out there,’” he said. “I needed something smaller.”

Murray State needed him as much as he needed to be a Racer. … Continue Reading

The team that rewrote the history books this season filed its final chapter in the 2011-12 season with a 62-53 loss to Marquette March 17 and the less than desirable ending in the third round of the NCAA Tournament is still resonating with the team.

“I don’t know if I’ll ever recuperate,” Head Coach Steve Prohm said. “I’m still frustrated, but you’ve got to move on at some point. Once we get the workouts going I’ll be able to move past it a little bit but I don’t know if I’ll ever completely move past it or forget it.”

The Racers ended the season with a 31-2 record, tying the program record of 31 wins, went undefeated on the road with a 13-0 record for the first time in 87 years of Murray State basketball – the only team in the nation to avoid a loss away from home, were ranked in the AP/ESPN Top-25 polls for 12 straight weeks and Prohm became one of the most successful rookie coaches in history with the 23-0 start to the season.

Despite the records, losing hurts for numerous reasons, Prohm said.

“(Losing hurts) just because you hurt for those guys,” Prohm, OVC and Basketball Times Coach of the Year, said. “Losing hurts because you feel like you let people down and losing hurts because the season ends and you don’t get to coach those three seniors anymore, and then losing hurts because these guys worked so hard and they were such great role models and they were really a great team. That’s why losing hurts.” … Continue Reading

In the midst of laundry piles, mailing letters and setting up practice for the Alabama Crimson Tide basketball team in the mid-1990s, a dream was birthed for then student manager Steve Prohm.

Ryan Richardson/The News

Now, almost two decades later, Prohm is living out his dream of being a Division-I head coach.

“Today is a culmination for me of an 18-year-old dream that started at the University of Alabama,” Prohm said in his introductory press conference May 23 after former Head Coach Billy Kennedy took the same position at Texas A&M.

During the 10 months since his tearful first address to the media and Murray State, Prohm has led the Racers through a historic season with a Hollywood feel, including a 23-game winning streak, the last unbeaten team in the nation and going into the Big Dance with the best record in the country at 30-1.

His dream keeps getting better and better. … Continue Reading

Alexis Love, junior from Palmetto, Fla., has burned up the track all year for the indoor squad. Last weekend, Love qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships with a school record 23.66 records in the 200-meter dash at a qualifying meet at Notre Dame. The run broke Heather Samuel’s 18-year-old record by .36 seconds and was one of three school records set over the weekend.

“I’m really excited,” Love said. “To say that I’m excited, to me is an understatement – this is crazy. I don’t even know how to feel, really words can’t describe it; I’m so thankful and so happy.”

Love also tied her own record in the 60-meter dash at 7.42 seconds, a mark she set the week before at the OVC Championships in Nashville, Tenn. Love previously won the OVC title in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.05 seconds.

Even though she had been working toward the goal, Love didn’t think this would be the year she would compete in the NCAAs.

“I don’t know about calming the excitement down, I’m still jittery,” Love said with a laugh. “Mentally I’m just going in with the same mindset, knowing I have to do everything, run faster and stuff like that, but mentally I just sleep on it and think about what I need to work on and what I didn’t do in the last race that could make me faster and just trying to stay focused.” … Continue Reading

It all came down to the last five seconds.

After battling point for point with Tennessee State the entire game, Murray State was tied at 52 with the Tigers with four seconds left in the game when senior guard Jewuan Long made a floater to seal the win and Ohio Valley Conference championship title for the Racers.

Senior guard Donte Poole and junior guard Isaiah Canaan had 14 points each to lead No. 12 ranked Murray State (30-1) past Tennessee State 54-52 and give the Racers their 15th championship Saturday afternoon in Nashville, Tenn.

Poole was named the OVC Tournament’s Most Valuable Player, becoming the 11th player in Murray State OVC history to do so, and the Racers’ rookie Head Coach Steve Prohm became the fifth first year coach to win the OVC Tournament.

“I never thought I would get this,” Poole said. “The first three years were a little tough for me but this is a great feeling, all the hard work is finally paying off. I told the guys this MVP trophy wasn’t just for me, I wouldn’t be here without any of my teammates or coaching staff so this is a team trophy as well.” … Continue Reading

Led by junior forward Kyra Watson with a career high 23 points and eight rebounds, the Racers came out of a tough matchup with a 90-73 victory over the Governors in Municipal Auditorium.

“It feels good,” Murray State Head Coach Rob Cross said. “They’ve knocked us out of the tournament for two of the last three years. I think any time you look at Austin Peay and Murray State in any sport, it’s a huge rivalry in the conference so it’s good to be a part of that.”

Alongside Watson, starters for Murray State included senior guard Mallory Schwab, junior guard Tessa Elkins, redshirt sophomore guard Erica Burgess and senior forward Kayla Lowe.

The meeting with the Govs was the Racers’ third after losing the first two in the regular season and was in favor of Austin Peay from the start with a first attempt three point shot made by Austin Peay’s Leslie Martinez and a turnover by Murray State in the first 15 seconds of play.

A tight battle for the lead was short lived, with Austin Peay leading by as much as 14. … Continue Reading
